ANCESTRY RESEARCH IS FASCINATING.

(This is from my family research and will be of more interest to my family members than the casual reader.)

HOW DID THE DODSONS COME INTO OUR FAMILY
The Patriarch of the Dodson family was John "Joe" Dodson.  And the family story goes, "In 1908 when the Goodwin family, James and Elizabeth and their three daughters,  Adeline (my grandmother) Carmen, and Hilda, were immigrating to Canada on the "Tunisian", they met a young man named Joe Dodson.  He was from the same area of England that they were and at 14 years old, he was an orphan with no adults with him, just a label addressed to Winnipeg Manitoba.  They took him under their wing so to speak and sort of adopted him.  He lived with the family when they first arrived in Winnipeg and became like a brother to their daughters.  The next generation always called him "Uncle Joe" and future generations grew up together as pseudo cousins.

A very nice story, but like most family stories, not quite true.  As I started to try to pin down this information, facts got in the way.  I first found the ships passenger list for the "Tunisian"  and sure enough, there on the same page as the Goodwin family was an entry for a single male, John Dodson.  But his age was listed as 18 years old.  Not exactly the child in the story, but a grown young man.  He was actually the same age as their oldest daughter Adeline.  Perhaps they were looking for a future husband for her.  Later research revealed that James was inclined to arrange marriages for his daughters.  The other untruth in the story is that Joe was heading for Winnipeg, as they were.  Well, the ships manifest shows that John's passage was booked for London, Ontario.  They would have had to part company at that point, as the Goodwins continued on to Winnipeg.  Perhaps Joe got off the train in London couldn't find work there, then followed on later.  Knowing he had friends here in Winnipeg, would have been an incentive, because we do know he ended up here.

My grandmother Adeline later married Tom Baker.  I have heard it quoted that,"James and Elizabeth Goodwin, didn't much like Tom Baker, So they made sure they picked the husbands for the other two daughters".  They married Carmen age 16, off to Harry Stewart at the age of 29, then later, Hilda age 17 was married off to Harry Whittaker at the age of  34.

GIRLS NOW A DAYS DON'T KNOW HOW LUCKY THEY ARE TO GET TO CHOOSE THEIR OWN HUSBANDS.

SHOCKING NEWS FROM THE MARINA

We are shocked and horrified to hear that our friend and dock mate Bob Inkster has landed in the Health Sciences Center hospital with serious outcomes.  It seems Bob has been living with type 2 diabetes for a few years now and complications from neuropathy have caused him to have to have his left leg amputated just below the knee.

Dan visited him in the hospital yesterday and his spirits were good, but he has a long road ahead of physio therapy, prosthetic fittings, learning to walk with a prosthetic, etc. etc..  Cards, calls and visits would certainly go a long way to help keep his spirits up during this long therapy journey he is about to go on.  Right now his is on the 3rd floor in HSC.  Keep him in your thoughts as we all look forward to seeing him at the marina next summer.

CHIN UP BOB, YOU CAN DO THIS

COOL WEATHER MEANS HOMEMADE SOUP

When the weather cools down, there is nothing quite as wonderful as homemade soup.  It's time to pull that Turkey carcass out of the freezer and put it in a pot.

By the time I'm finished, I add so many vergetables it always ends up being Stewp" .  A cross between soup and stew.  But really tasty and really healthy.

COOL FALL WEATHER AND HOMEMADE SOUP.

DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!

I just got a very frustrating letter from Victoria General Hospital Diagnostic Imaging Programs telling me that the Nuclear Scan of my heart has been postponed.

"Due to an Isotope shortage"??  So, who's incompetence is that?  How can a hospital that runs a diagnostic imaging program allow that to happen.  Do they not have a consistent supply line?  And if not, why not?

GGGGGGGGRRRRRRR!!

Anyways, the scans I was to go for  on November 2nd and 3rd, are now rescheduled for November 12th and 13th.  Which means my results will be in limbo over the weekend and no decision on follow up, will occur until at least Monday November 16th or later that week.

SO, OUR DEPARTURE FOR TEXAS IS DELAYED EVEN FURTHER

Well, here we are still stuck waiting for Medical appointments to come and go, and to find out what is going to ensue from those appointments.

The weather is holding so far, but historically Manitoba gets snow that stays for good, on or about November 15th.  I want to be out of here before that.

THE COMPUTER STRUGGLE CONTINUES

Well, the battle continues, I am slowly slogging through.   I think I finally have all my favorites on Windows 10, I had to manually key them all in as I couldn't find a short cut that would transfer them from Foxfire to this new Windows application.

But now that, that is done, I have found that I could have transferred them from Foxfire to the old Internet Explorer then to the new one.  Oh, well, lesson learned for when I transfer my laptop over.   And as I work to do these chores it takes forever, but that is how I am learning where everything is and how it now works.

I WILL GET THROUGH THIS.  I still have my contacts address book to get onto this thing.  If I can figure it out it will sure save me a lot of work.  Then I just have to figure out this Cloud thing.

I'LL JUST KEEP PLUGGING AWAY

WINDOWS 10

I have spent the last couple of days working on my desk top computer, switching it over from Windows 7 to Windows 10.   I switched my Laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 8, while down in Texas last winter.  When I updated to Windows 8, I hated that learning curve and swore I would never go through that again.  But I ended up with Windows 8 on my Laptop and still had Windows 7 on my Desktop at home.  Which doesn't make it easy to switch back and forth.

I have heard varying opinions on Windows 10.  A couple of people I talked to gave me dire warnings of nothing but problems with it.  Then I also got the nod from others saying "Go ahead, you will like it.  It's kind of a combination of Windows 7 and Windows 8."    So to solve my problem I have jumped in with one foot.  (only my desk top so far)

Well, there were no real hang ups on the update, it went smoothly.  It's looks a little different, but not totally.    It is just a matter of figuring out where they have put everything I need.  With every update, they always seem to, not only move things, but rename them as well.  I went through this last winter down in Texas  So here I am going through the learning curve again, to bring them both up to the same standard.

Right now I am trying to get my "Favourites" and my "Contacts and Address" lists switched over to "10".   I am also trying to learn IDrive, to put everything on the cloud.  I will work with my desk top on Windows 10 until I feel confident about switching my Laptop over.  Hopefully that will go more quickly and I will have them both running smoothly before we head south.

THIS SHOULD KEEP ME BUSY WHILE I AM AWAITING DOCTORS APPOINTMENTS.

A MEDICAL HITCH

Well, it looks like our departure to the Rio Grand Valley is going to be delayed slightly.

I now have two appointments booked for Nuclear Scans of my heart.  One on November 2nd at 9:30 am and again on November 3rd at 11:30 am.  ??

Apparently this gives them a more detailed look at what is going on with my heart after my little episode at Gimli Hospital this summer.  I don’t know when my doctors will get the results of these scans and what and when the follow up will be.   But, I am busying myself trying to get as ready as possible for, if and when, we get the OK for us to travel.

HOPEFULLY WE WILL BE ON OUR WAY IN EARLY NOVEMBER
